- Respiratory Disease : Answers to Questions -

Hello everybody!!!
I have started to work in Respiratory Unit in a London Hospital and I was asked to answer to some questions about Respiratory system and related pathologies.
I have had the idea to write a brief article to explain with simple words and quickly
about important questions that you maybe have already encountered once in your life.
Let's start now with First Question! 😀😀😀

1) Describe the mechanism of inhalation :

The inhalation is the process in which the air is introduced into the lungs through  airways ( nose - farynx - trachea - bronchi - bronchioli - lungs). During this process the volume of the thoracic cavity is increased as a result of the contraction of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles.
The Volume is increased and the pressure decreased ( Boyl's Law )
The lungs and the alveoli sacs are full of air now!

2) Describe the mechanism of exhalation :

The exhalation is the process which the air is expelled from the lungs after gaseous exchange.
The intercostal muscles are relaxed, returning the chest wall to its original position. The diaphragm relax moving high into the thoracic cavity. This process increases the pressure and dicrease the volume of air in the lungs.

3) Explain gaseous Exchange that happens in the lungs and what makes the lungs the ideal evirorment for this occur

Gaseous Exchange occurs in the little sacs called alveoli where a very thin membrane separates the blood in the alveolar capillary from the alveolar air in the sacs. During the inhalation the air ( 500 ml ) flows in through the airways ( start with nose and end with lungs) until the alveoli where the gas Exchange occur.
The oxygen getting through the alveolar membrane and then in the alveolar capillaries system ( blood circle ) during inhalation and carbon dioxide is excreted through the exhalation

4) What is COPD ?

It means Chronic Obrstructive Pulmonary Disease. It's one of the most common noncommunicable disease in the west world. Gets progressively worse over time and it involves the alveoli with emphysema and bronchi with chronic bronchitis.
The principal symptoms are short of brethness - cough - mucus - frequent bronchitis and chest infections.

5) What is Asthma?

Asthma is a long- term disease of the airways of the lungs, characterized of reversible obstructions and broncospasm. Most common symptoms are wheezing, coughing, chest costriction and short of breathness. The principal causes are allergies, pollution, genetic cause.
There is no traditional cure actually for asthma ( some scientific studies confirm  the inhalation of THC to relief the symptoms ).
The best thing to do is prevent the symptoms with correct healthy life style, finding the best food in nature to treat this pathology.

6) What is Pulmonary Fibrosis ?

It is a lung disease which " scars " are formed in pulmonar tissue giving respiratory problem. The scars create lot of fibrosis connective tissue that leads to thicknessing of the lungs walls; causing Hypossemia and the most common symptom is short of breathness.

7) What is the best position for a patient with respiratory disease to be in to aid in successful inhalation and exhalation?

Seated, rest well with feet down to the ground, with knees wide apart, bending upper body forward slightly with arms resting on chair arms or on knees.
Back strenght and abdomen relaxed.

This article wants to be a little help for people who want a brief explanation of priciples mechanisms and pathologies of respiratory system.
